How to add an Office 365 account to Zimbra

These instructions apply to recent versions of Thunderbird only, if you are running an older version please download and install the latest version from: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/

  • Open Thunderbird
  • Select 'Account Settings' in the 'Tools' menu, or press Alt-T if you have your menu bar hidden.
  • Select 'Account Actions' and pick 'Add Mail Account...'
  • Enter your name, email address and password and click continue.
  • Allow Thunderbird to try to discover the server settings, it should only take a few seconds.
  • Check to see if Thunderbird discovered Zimbra or Office 365, based on the displayed incoming server hostname, using the table below.

(Thunderbird found Office 365)
  • Click 'Manual Config'
  • Enter the following settings:
Manual Config Settings:

Incoming: IMAP
Server Hostname: outlook.office365.com
Port: 993
SSL: SSL/TLS
Authentication: Normal password

Outgoing: SMTP
Server Hostname: smtp.office365.com
Port: Auto
SSL: STARTTLS
Authentication: Normal password

Username:
Incoming: USERNAME@athabascau.ca
(replace USERNAME with your username)

Outgoing: USERNAME@athabascau.ca
(replace USERNAME with your username)

  • Click Re-test (the outgoing port should change from Auto to 587)
  • Click Done
  • Note: If you have both Zimbra and Office 365 added to Thunderbird you may be prompted to provide an alternate account name.
  • Click Done

  • If you have both Zimbra and Office 365 setup in Thunderbird you should remove the Zimbra outgoing mail server. If you do not do this your outgoing mail may start failing when Zimbra is decommissioned.
    • Click Outgoing Server (SMTP)
    • Select the line ending in smtp.athabascau.ca (Make sure you select the correct line!)
    • Click Remove
  • Click OK to close the Account Settings window.
Note: If you have both Zimbra and Office 365 added to Thunderbird you may need to provide an alternate account name.
